Do proms always suck, or is it just me? – Flashback Friday

May 15, 2009

Seriously?

This Flashback Friday (a first here, but probably not the last) is brought to you via Papa (who was sadly promless) and organized by Blissfully Caffeinated and The Stiletto Mom.

Junior Year Prom – 1989

prom 1989

(Face obscured to protect the guilty? OK, I guess it’s not his fault) Wow! How happy do I look? I think we were only there long enough to have the picture taken. I don’t remember dancing much. The guy was my boyfriend at the time, and really the first long term boyfriend I kept around (for almost a year). Our plans were to leave prom early and go out to eat with another couple. Problem No. 1 – the only place to eat was over 30 miles away, which really is only a problem because of Problem No. 2 – The boyfriend – MY boyfriend, a senior, had a curfew of 11 p.m. 11 PM CURFEW ON PROM NIGHT? WTF? By the time we did leave it was later than planned (of course), we got half way there and I’m like “we aren’t going to have enough time to even get there and back before your 11 PM CURFEW, and we will definitely not have enough time to actually eat anything when we do get there.” Because we had planned to eat out, we didn’t eat anything at prom. I was HUNGRY. He took me home and just made it home before his 11 PM CURFEW. I had just turned 16 and didn’t yet have a driver’s license or I’d have been going back to prom. Better than sitting home on a Friday Night – a Friday Night Prom Night at that – just because your boyfriend had an 11 PM CURFEW. Karma? The whole 11 PM thing would continue to …

Senior Year Prom – 1990

prom 1990

(Face obscured to protect the innocent) The reason our attire doesn’t match as nicely as the attire in the top picture is because this nice guy wasn’t my boyfriend, just a friend, and it was a last minute date. My boyfriend went to a different high school and was out of town the weekend of my prom for a chess tournament (sounds geeky, right? I was way geekier than he was, which wasn’t hard to do because he was totally not a geek. That’s not a compliment for him). My friend didn’t have a date for the prom so we decided to go together. He already had his tux. I didn’t really care about prom so I just used the same dress from our winter formal. The dress was purchased during a long Thanksgiving weekend vacation in DC at a little boutique off the Metro in Crystal City, VA (I’m so amazed I remember all that). This was the first year that prom wasn’t at the high school. I never did understand why it wasn’t at the HS. This prom was at the local college, which really wasn’t all that local to most of the students (my date had to travel almost an hour and a half). It also meant that they had less time to decorate, less people could decorate because you had to either have a car or know someone who did, and we had less room than the gym where it was usually held. Whatever. Back to my story. As the night went on, we were having a good time, but I started feeling sicker and sicker. I think by the time my nice, understanding date took me home I was barely alert. Turns out that my boyfriend had given me a little going away present before his chess tournament – strep throat. Oh, and I was home before 11 PM.

How was your prom?

random me meme

May 14, 2009

My first meme tag! I feel so special now! Thanks to Tuli at Defective Typewriter.

What are your current obsessions?
My hair, shoes, wire (I’m excited because I got to go to an excellent hardware store today to buy wire!)

What’s for dinner?
More like a lunch. I only do this once a year but I got a big Basket of Fries with cheese at McDonald’s. It’s kinda a local thing.

What is your greatest fear at the moment?
That I’m never going to get everything done that I need to get done.

What are you listening to?
CSI: NY – just listening, not actually watching

If you were a goddess what would you be?
A muse for creativity.

What are your favourite holiday spots?
Kure Beach, Clearwater/Tampa Bay area, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo

What are you reading right now?
Odd Hours by Dean Koontz

What is your guilty pleasure?
Romantic movies, not really romcoms, just with some romance. My favorite example.

Who or what makes you laugh?
My niece, my dad. I can’t really get into stand-up and no one famous really stands out right now.

What is your favourite spring thing to do?
Get the shorts and tanks out! Buy new summer shoes. Or And new spring shoes.

Where are you planning to travel next?
I’m not. I rarely get to travel anymore, but we may end up doing something short this summer. Maybe going to Pittsburgh to catch the Pirates.

What is the best thing you ate or drank lately?
Some cheesy taco-ish salad. Corn chips, spicy meat and beans, lettuce, salsa, cheese, sour cream, and some green onions from my mom’s garden. I love green onions!

When was the last time you were tipsy?
So long ago I can’t even remember. Sadly at least 5 years since I’ve even had a drop of alcohol.

What is your favorite ever film?
If I had time I could probably list about 300. I don’t have an all-time favorite. I like most movies and can watch just about anything. As long as it’s not animated. Can barely do that.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your children?
No kids. Most kids I know make me feel like like I’m glad I can’t have any. Except my niece. She makes me wish I could have half a dozen just like her! Or at least one.

What song can’t you get out of your head?
Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight) – ABBA Gold has been my traveling companion this week

What book do you know you should read but refuse to?
Probably any of the classics. It’s not that I don’t want to read them, I have read some, I just don’t want to read a book because that’s what everyone else has done.

What is your physical abnormality/abnormal physical ability?
I can bend my thumb back to my wrist. Nothing special, but I haven’t seen many other people who can do it. Other than the women in my family.

What is your favourite candy?
Reese’s cups, preferably the miniature or special holiday shapes, caramel-filled Hershey’s Kisses, and cherry-filled Hershey’s Kisses

What is your favourite body part?
Sometimes my hair, sometimes my eyes. Meh.

What other bloggers are you tagging?
No one. Anyone left who hasn’t done it? (I’m looking at you, Brian) Just let me know so I can take a peek!

A little rain

It’s that time of year again. Well, it’s always that time of year with our river, but even more so during the spring. It hasn’t been raining very hard, just a near constant drizzle for the past several days. It doesn’t take much though.

A few weeks ago I did a post where I explored the riverbank in my backyard. Here is a pic from that post showing a view of the riverbank.

In my exploring post I showed a picture of the old abandoned bridge at the end of the street. Here is a pic showing the bridge from below:

riverbank 46

I’ve been taking some pictures of the bridge for a post I’ll do sometime later (probably much later now). Here is a photo from a little over 2 weeks ago from the side:

This is from the side today:

And a partial view from the front 2 weeks ago:

And from the front today:

It could be worse. (And may yet be worse since the river isn’t supposed to crest until tonight). About 11 months ago it was over the bridge and into the street. That is when the side of the bridge washed away.

Bless you Mother Nature!

We have a local spring event tomorrow where I’ll be able to sell some of my creations. Since the only other time I’ve had an opportunity to sell was Christmas, I’ve been looking for some accessories and props with a Spring/Summer theme. I’ve spent 2 weeks searching the limited selection of stores we have, and their limited selection of tablecloths (or even flat sheets) to use as a tablecloth that will actually cover the table I have. Today I gave up and just opted for fabric. I found this on the bargain shelves (the colors don’t show up quite right, the pink is more pink and the blue is closer to turquoise) at $1.50/yd. I bought 6 yards which cost me less than 1 flat sheet or 2 tablecloths, and will make me at least 3 that actually cover my table.
