Friday the 13th Part I

No, this post isn’t about the movie. But while I’m on that topic I always wonder why I rarely see Friday the 13th movies on Friday the 13th anymore? Maybe it’s just my cable system, it is pretty shitty, but seriously? not even one? And what about Saturday the 14th? I haven’t seen that on cable in years.

I love horror movies and I’m not really picky about them. Cheesy? sounds good to me. Old? I’ll watch. Subtitles? I’ll probably be too busy to actually read all of it but I’ll still turn it on. I read a year or so ago that there is actually a Horror Channel somewhere (not on mine crappy cable, of course) and I thought “it is about freaking time!”

The Happening is coming out today. I know there are thousands of people who think M. Night is an untalented, egotistical hack – but I’m not one of them. I wouldn’t say I’m his #1 fan, but I do think his work is interesting. I don’t get to go to the theatre often but if I had the time I would definitely go see this on the big screen. My next big screen viewing will be The X-Files: I Want to Believe (oh, thank you!). It has been almost exactly 10 years since the first X-Files movie came out and I will never forget it. Not just because of the movie, though that was memorable, but because while I was watching the movie my ex-husband was FINALLY moving out. That’s a story for another time.

I used to go to the movies all of the time. My dad took me when I was little and growing up I went as often as I could, which isn’t easy. The first 2 movies I clearly remember seeing were The Coal Miner’s Daughter (which would have been around my 7th birthday, and For Your Eyes Only (I would have been about 8 for this one). I’m sure there were several before those, but for some reason those really stick out for me.

Tiny Town doesn’t have a theatre, though we do have a drive-in nearby. Since I moved back to Tiny Town 4 years ago I’ve only been there once. We have another single screen theatre about 45 minutes away but the closest multiplex is over an hour away. I’ve been averaging about 2 theatre trips a year for the last 4 years. Which sucks.

When I moved to CA in 1999, I went so often! In the first city I lived I didn’t really know many people so I would go once or twice a week. I moved closer to my job and started working odd hours – usually 3 or 4 hours during the day, and then back to work all night – so I had a lot of free time during the day when my friends were at work. I sometimes went to the theatre 4 or 5 times a week. On occasion I would watch a movie twice – once by myself and once withfriends. The best part was that there were 3 separate multi-plexes in town – all within walking distance of my work and home! The multi-plex I frequented most was underground and had about 6 or 7 screens. There was also a beautiful Art Moderne theatre that was an experience in itself. That theatre also had a three- or four-plex next to it (same company). I tried to watch more movies at the main screen though. I also went several times to a 3 screen theatre that showed mostly foreign and independent films. They had cheap (inexpensive) popcorn and drinks! There was a drive-in there but I never got a chance to see it.

When I go to a movie I absolutely have to have popcorn and a drink. I love popcorn anyway but there is nothing like Movie Theatre Popcorn (not even Orville Redenbacher’s Pour-over Movie Theatre Popcorn, but that will do when I’m craving it at home). And since I’m always thirsty, a drink is a must. Which gets pretty expensive.

The only other movie I know I’ll see this year on the big screen is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I’m a Harry Potter fan and I’ve taken my oldest nephew (and sometimes my other nephew) to all of the Harry Potter movies.

Wow, I hadn’t even thought about talking about movies this morning.

Hubs and I go to the theater pretty often, once, maybe twice a month, of course, our theater is pretty close, its only a twenty minute drive!

Yay! Thanks for my first comment! And I’ve seen you around the blogosphere!

I am so jealous! The drive-in is only about 15 minutes drive and I am going to make an effort to go at least once this summer. Of course, I say that every year. I would like to go when they are showing 2 movies that are worth spending 4 hours sitting in one place, which doesn’t happen often. One good thing though is that I can take a blanket and sit or lay on the ground while watching.
